  15. <p>     DIED. Karl Menninger, 96, psychiatrist who brought mental
  16. therapy into the medical mainstream and transformed the
  17. nation's way of thinking about the mentally ill and criminally
  18. disposed; of cancer; in Topeka. An innovative maverick with a
  19. streak of curmudgeonliness, Menninger sometimes said he was
  20. "more Freudian than Freud," meaning that he took his lessons
  21. from direct observation of each unique mind. Menninger founded
  22. the Menninger Clinic in Topeka with his father and brother in
  23. the 1920s and spent the next five decades developing it into one
  24. of the world's most celebrated hospitals for the mentally ill.
